Question by : Good value for money Digital SLR (DSLR) camera?
I need a good DSLR camera for my A-level photography. Quite cheap, however good quality. Any ideas? Preferably Canon or Nikon, however the brand doesn’t really matter. Thank you

a good starter from my experience would be something like a Canon eos 350d ,not too expensive

Olypmus’ new SLR systems are very good at decent prices, you can also get lens converters for most common lens makes. The new SLR’s have built in body image stabilization, which as apposed to lens stabilization is much better. They also take 4:3 format images and high resolutions.

I bought a Pentax K100d on eBay a couple of years ago for £30 and it is a very good camera.
The good thing about a Pentax DSLR is that the lenses used on the old 35mm SLRs are fully compatible with the digitals, so as I had lenses from my 35mm cameras I did not have to fork out a lot of money to accessorise it. All my PK A fit lenses work on it, some only in manual mode but still it has been an amazing buy. The Super Takumars still take stunning photos and are sought after lenses.
Even if you do not have any lenses for it you can buy used PK A fit lenses on eBay at a fraction of the price you would pay for a Nikon, Canon or Olympus.
The problems I considered at the time were that most other manufacturers including Nikon and Canon designed a lot of functions within the lens itself which make their DSLRs not fully compatible with their 35mm cameras, and their digital lenses too expensive.

OK good value for money is a very subjective thing. £700 would buy you a used Canon 1D mkII or Canon 5D classic, they’re both great value for money considering what you get. And most photographers would see that as quite cheap. When you compare that to a 1DmkIV that costs £4000 or so (what a 1D mkII would have cost when new), and a 5DmkII at £1500-2000 or so the mkII and 5D classic are bargains for what you’re getting.

Then you have the lenses you get, £400-500 for a Canon 70-200mm f4L is amazing value too! It’s one of canon’s best lenses, but it’s not exactly cheap.

So tell us what’s youre budget, and you we can give you the right camera for the right money, but heres a rough guide:

£150-£300 – used cameras only, at the low end of that you’ll struggle to afford some more useful lenses to go with that camera. Expect to be stuck with an 18-55 which may leave you unable to fulfil some of your ideas at comprehensively as you wanted.

£300-500 – really low end new cameras, ok it’s new but you’ll still be stuck with an 18-55, not good. You’re better with a decent used setup.

£500-1000 – entry level with decent system. You could think about a Canon 450D and a 70-200mm f4L (non IS)

£1000+ you can look at a Nikon D90, Pentax K7 or a Canon 50D with decent selection of kit.

Remember the camera body is just a box of electronics that connects you with the lens and the sensor. If the lens and body can’t be told to so exactly as you wish you may end up spending hours hitting your head against a brick wall struggling to achieve something that you know is within your technical capability.

the Pentax K-x is a great DSLR for beginners, and it’s cheap.
