I don’t understand why canon call their flash speedlite and nikon call their flash speedlight.
is it the brand?

No the brand is Canon or Nikon, in the UK we call them flashguns, in the US strobes, however that has a different meaning in the UK and the rest of the World. So they hit on the generic name of speedlight which can be used Worldwide.
