Question by : Can you shoot with a Canon EOS 600D without the any extra lenses?
What kind of quality picture would you get?

Basically, I’m off to the US in May 2011 for a few weeks to travel around a bit (New York, Florida, SAn Fran etc) and want to take some awesome pictures – I am a novice photographer however really interested in taking it further and I don’t know what camera to get. Should I go with a DSLR, like the Canon EOS? Or should I go with something else?

Any suggestions on what would suit my needs? Obviously I don’t want to lug around loads of kit with me wherever I go.

Hi,

All depends on the money you want to spend, the lense is key in my opinion, For an all round beginner budget kit, You could do alot worse than a nikon d3100 (does Video too!) and get a good range zoom lense something likon a nikon 18-135mm, the 18-55mm nikon standard kit lense is very sharp compared to canon basic kit lense (canon lovers may dispute this), and then if you want to do telephoto however yet keep your kit weight down a 70-300mm VR would be a good option or if you have a few more quid a sigma 70-200 f.2.8 is an excellent lense although heavy. another cracker of a lense is a nikon 50mm f.1.8 and cheap (less than £100).

uping the scale – Nikon D90 is good, The much older (and now much cheaper second hand) the D80 is old however good in good light. And if you have the buckage the D7000 is good too.

Check out Kenrockwell.com I generally trust his reviews (although I do suspect he’s on the nikon pay roll)

Canon 550d supposed to be decent although I havnt alot of experience with canon…(although I am selling a canon 450d with an image stablised lense on ebay/gumtree this week :-)

how much are you trying to spend? i have a Nikon d90 and i am very happy with the options and ease of use. But it was right around 1k… so it depends on why you need it and the price you want to spend.

Question by vitamin exist: i want near dslr quality from a point and shoot cam, any suggestion which one i should get?
I’m looking to buy a new digital camera, i don’t want to lug around a DSLR, can someone suggest a point and shoot that will give me near DSLR quality photos? I was looking at the Canon powershot G7, however have been put off a bit by the mixed reviews, particulary about the high levels of noise at higher ISOs.

Question by F9T: Is there any point in buying an DSLR camera?
I’m going to Kenya in a couple of months to the Masai Mara and want to take some really good photos. I want a decent camera however I am no expert on how to use DSLR cameras, infact I’ve never used a slr so is there any point in buying one?

I’ve had these Sony Cybershot compact digital cameras which seem ok, however I was never satisfied 100%, I always been into night shots and they couldn’t capture much light.

I really want a good DSLR like a Canon or Nikon however am a total amature and worried it’ll do me no good as I’ve never used them before.

The cameras your referring too, have a lot of whistles and bells to contend with, and would require a great amount of time on your part. I am not sure what you are looking for, as far as pictures are concerned, however they can deliver the shots you want if you know how to use them. Other wise you might be disappointed in the results.
I would say that you might consider a Konica/ Minolta D7. That DSLR has a built in stabilizer, where as the other cameras have a stabilizer in the lens. That means, you will need to buy very expensive len’s.
I certainly hope that this information can help you with your decision.

Question by Ziad Noname: I want to buy a Semi-Pro DSLR Camera..Help me please.?
Always been interested into photography and always use my friend’s camera’s, i really enjoy it however i want to get one and i have no idea which one to get, as i said before i want a semi-pro one as i have used a couple before like the 500D,550D Canon, and some Nikon ones,I’m looking for something between 600-700 euros,800 maybe, so please if you have any advice please help me.

I was thinking of buying a 550D canon however i have my doubts as i heard there are better around the same price, (Nikon D5000,Pentax K-r,Sony a (alpha)).they where all in kits so i list what they had and you can help me out, which one of these is the best choice (keep in mind cost and semi-pro or better).

Sony a (alpha) DSLR-A390Y – Flashlight (3 x zoom lens – 18 mm – 55 mm – f/3.5-5.6 DT SAM & 3.6 x zoom lens – 55 mm – 200 mm – f/4.0-5.6 DT SAM) – Digital SLR Camera (749,00 €)

You need to consider a few things:

Which of those camera systems has the most options.

This includes the number of lenses available from each company, the fact that only certain Nikon and Canon dSLR’s can be tethered to Adobe Lightroom 3, Nikon and Canon are the most preferred camera systems by the pros (thus more good used equipment seems to be available) and the best third party lenses (Tokina) are only available in Nikon and Canon mounts

Visit you local camera shop and hold each of your choices in your hands and see which fit the best and are easiest for you to control

NOTE: The availability of cameras is going to reduce due to the earthquake in Japan and the cost of what you may still find available will probably increase in certain markets

Is there a website that can show you the effects of different lenses?

Question by Mikey: Is there a website that can show you the effects of different lenses?
I recently got my first DSLR. Its a Canon 450D. It came with a 18-55mm lens. I don’t understand what the mm measurements are for. My friend was just looking at buying a lens for his camera. I think it may have been a 35-70 mm however not sure. What I would like to see is the same picture taken with various different lenses with an explanation of the difference in the picture.

Do you know of any sites that have this sort of simple tutorial?

Thanks in advance

canon powershot sx1is or any other?

Question by Peter John: canon powershot sx1is or any other?
I v fallen in love with SX1 IS. I just want on camera size of this that can take good picture, full hd movies, DSLR quality and unique Canon design.
Its around £300. Is it worth and suitable for my needs.
Or could you advise me about any other option.
Many thanks.
Peter

Answer by Petra_au
The SX1 IS does NOT produce dSLR quality images. That’s because it’s a point & shoot camera with a small image sensor. The CMOS sensor doesn’t improve on image quality at all, it only allows the use of full HD video. It produces lots of ‘noise’…too much for my liking. The SX10 IS has better image quality, however it does not record Full HD video.

Question by Katrina: Is it possible to upload pictures to a laptop from a DSLR without the installation disc?
I have a Canon EOS 300D DSLR and my friend has a mac book. We’re in Wales and I didn’t bring my installation disc with me, is there any way to upload pictures?

We of course did try to just plug it in and see what happens.. however NOTHING does :( when you put normal digital cameras in it just comes up on the desktop, however with my DSLR it doesn’t!!

Please help, is there any thing we can go onto that would find my camera? Like iphoto or will it just not work without the disc?

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!?
Thank you!
The laptop doesn’t have a memory card slot :( and we honestly can’t get our hands on a memory card reader.
It was really more applications and programs on the laptop, I meant! We also don’t have wi-fi access. We’re on mobile Internet right now :( so we can’t download anything!

PLEASE PLEASE! Someone have a miracle solution :D Pleeeeeeeeease!

If the pictures are stored on an sd card then you can take it out and put it in a card reader.

Hope this helps!
