Question by Irfan S: Used DSLR Camera purchase?
HI, I am planning to purchase a used DSLR Canon 1000D with 18-55mm EFS lens for £300, It will be my first DLSR camera, so dont know much about them. I am buying from a private person off gumtree who has owned if for 6 months and says hes selling it to upgrade. It still has manufacture warranty and his add says its im mint condition. However im very cautious and want to make sure that i test it and ask him the right questions to make sure that im not being sold a dodgy camera. What are the technical things i should be checking for before I buy the camera? What are the right questions to ask him to make sure hes not selling me a defected camara.

Please can you advice urgently as im going to see the camera today, this evening at 6pm

Thanks in advance
Thanks guys, you saved me from getting ripped off. Im so glad I posted this message. Cheers

£300?? The camera body and lens brand new only costs £330 – 340!! Spend the extra few £30 and do not be ripped off by this!!!!!!

type “canon 1000d kit” into google shopping and see for yourself!!!

In response to your question it is difficult to fully test a 2nd hand camera, make sure the zoom and focus operate smoothly and the pictures taken are not bright or dark (over/underexposed). I know someone who purchased one second hand and there were pixels missing on the image when loaded onto a computer…impossible to tell until he owned it. for the price seriously buy brand new!

Q&A: What DSLR should i get for A level photography?

Question by James: What DSLR should i get for A level photography?
Ive been doing photography since i was 13 and i settled with a bridge camera about 2 years ago. I defo need a SLR..NOW!!! Was thinking of the canon 450D with a 300mm lens. any advice?

Best answer:

Answer by AMPhoto
Depends on your budget, however that camera can certainly take good pictures. I am not sure why you want a 300mm lens though, thats going to be very limited in application especially if its a prime for which you really only have two choices, the Canon 300mm f/4 (00) and the Canon 300mm f/2.8 (00). If you are buying a 450D I would doubt you have money for either of those. If you do and you have been into photography for a long time I would suggest a used Canon 5D and mid range zoom to start like the 24-70 f/2.8 or 24-105 f/4. An alternative would be a mid range prime like the 50mm f/1.4. If are only looking for entry level body however still have some money then consider getting the 17-55 f/2.8 lens to start. Its a great lens, and will be much easier to use than a 300mm prime whcih will really only be good for sports possibly some wildlife and on rare occasion, a portrait. It really depends on what you plan to photograph.

Which DSLR camera would you recommend?

Question by Lucie: Which DSLR camera would you recommend?
I am looking to buy my first DSLR camera as I love photography and am looking to take it more seriously.
I don’t want an overly expensive one, just a good quality and less expensive – ideally up to £300. The brand isn’t particularly important, however I would prefer a Canon or Nikon.
Also, which are the most useful lenses?
Thanks.

Answer by deep blue2
Either of those makes will be good. You’ll hear people recommending one over the other, however that’s personal opinion often based on brand loyalty. All of the above manufacture high quality DSLR’s which (in the equivalent price band) will do the same thing. I happen to have a Nikon (and I wouldn’t change now) however am equally happy to use a Canon.

The best one for you is the one that feels right. Narrow down a list of models from each maker with the features that you want in your price range. Then go into a camera shop and try them out with various lenses. Look for the weight, position of howevertons, which feels most comfortable in your hand.

As for lenses, well that depends on what you want to shoot. I have a 18-200mm lens for general walkabout stuff, a 50mm macro for macro work (and its good for portraits), a 10-20mm (wide angle) for landscapes, and a 150-500mm for sport/wildlife shots. It all depends on what you like to shoot really. A mid range zoom might be a good starting point, say 24-70mm.

As well as branded lenses, bear in mind third party manufacturers (Tokina, Sigma, Tamron) also make lenses for Nikon/Canon and these are usually of as good a quality however cheaper. If money is tight they are worth looking at.

Best way to work studio lighting with 2 lights?

Question by Ajw: Best way to work studio lighting with 2 lights?
I have 2 studio lights (with stands and umbrellas) I also have a DSLR canon camera and a digital slave flash. I have a white backdrop. I am still getting quite a lot of shadows and it doesn’t matter how I position things – even following certain points, I can’t seem to get it just right.Any help would be greatly appreciated… PLEASE!!! :)

Best answer:

Answer by fhotoace
Move the subject at least four feet from the background. Raise the lights so they are aimed slightly down on the subjects so that the shadows are lower than the subjects

What you are missing are background lights to evenly light the background.

The two lights you have are going to be necessary to light your subjects. You can use a typical 1:2 lighting ratio for people and most products. Higher lighting ratios will add drama (like 1:4 or even 1:8)

IS it possible is inter change camera lens between makes of camera?

Question by Dirty Rob: IS it possible is inter change camera lens between makes of camera?
I have a minolta DSLR and want to know if it is possible to put the Lens I have on a canon DSLR . I am not sure if it is possible to get anything that will go between the lens and the camera body. LIke a converter or something.
cheers

Answer by LEM
No, you can’t do that. Canon and Minolta are completely different systems. You may be able to stick Minolta lens on a Sony DSLR, as Sony acquired Minolta technology as it pulled out of the camera business. So their mounts are the same. But in general, with exception like this different brands are not compatible. There are third party lens makers that make versions of their lenses for different brand mounts, like Sigma or Tamron. But even then a Sigma lens made for Canon mount won’t go on Nikon, etc.
