Question by adrthsdrh: Is the Canon EOS 350D a good camera?
And i read something on wikepedia on some cameras being sold on ebay for having defective lenses or something?
So im sorta troubled since the one im planning on bidding is on ebay

Im not a photographer or anything,
i just need a dslr for my self directed art assignment at school.

Can you tell me some details or cameras you can recommend?

Answer by Paul R
The 350 is a little old nowadays, still a perfectly capable camera in its own right, just things have moved on (most notably rear screen quality and megapixel count) however as a budget first DSLR you could do a lot worse.

The kit lens, the 18-55 II isn’t the worlds greatest. It can do a job, however is probably a weak point of the camera. This is the snobby approach, the imatest approach. If you prefer to shoot objects and people rather than lens testing charts then give the kit lens a go, it might be up to your requirements, if so, great, if not then the beauty of DSLRs is that you can replace the lens.

Something like sigmas budget 18-50 DC lens can be found for under £50 used and is a step up, quality wise.

Having trouble setting the correct white balance on dslr?

Question by bruvvamoff: Having trouble setting the correct white balance on dslr?
I am not sure which white balance setting to use on my Canon 7d for shooting video indoors under normal house light bulbs? The trouble is, all the white balances look ok to me when I look at them for more than a few seconds. I’m sure this is down to inexperience. I have colour correction tools. Should I trust the Canon 7D presets and always set it to the recommended?
What about filming indoors using only the light coming in through the windows?
Film school? That’s a good one.

get a white balance card or lens cap… then you can set it for that place…

My compact camera takes better pictures than my new DSLR?

Question by Hai: My compact camera takes better pictures than my new DSLR?
I have a compact camera thats almost three years old and the pictures are really sharp, however my new canon 500d camera that cost £500! doesnt take sharp pictures, Is the camera faulty or do I need a better lens, Im using the 18-55mm lens that came with it.

Best answer:

Answer by fhotoace
What that means is you do not have the necessary skills to use a fully adjustable dSLR camera

You may want to take a class in photography so you know how to use the various controls on your fine 500D.

With a sensor that is over 15 times the size of your compact cameras sensor. The lens if fine. If it wasn’t, no one would buy Canon cameras with the 18-55 mm lens.

Which dslr camera and lenses should I buy?

Question by sanju: Which dslr camera and lenses should I buy?
If my priority is limited only to portraits and landscapes, which camera should I buy between Canon EOS 40d and Sony Alpha a350 ? Or is there any other better choices? Please also tell me which model’s lenses are cheeper?

You could also go with the Nikon range of cameras.

As far as lenses go…sony/minolta’s are not cheap at all and they’re limited in types in comparison to the ones available from canon/nikon. In fact, if you got the Sony, you usually have to go and get a Sigma brand lens in order to get the lens that you need. Sigma makes lenses that can be used on canon/nikon/sony and are usually cheaper than the branded lenses…however there are quality differences so you should go online and heavily research them before purchasing.

The problem with your picture specialties is that the lenses required by them are somewhat disparate. Since most SLRs (except the most expensive ones) are not full frame…you need to buy special lenses for landscapes (wide-angle with a low mm range)…for portraiture, I would recommend lenses with a large aperture. You can get both types with the Nikon/Canon ranges.

Question by Jack D: Where can i get a good 2nd hand DSLR?
I am looking to get a 2nd hand DSLR as I don’t have £300+ to spend on a new one as I am only 14.
I have looked at the Canon 1000d for £350 with 18-55mm lens.
Where could i get this or anything similar for about £120 – £150?

Q&A: Nikon or Canon ??????

July 5, 2011 by

Question by Sam: Nikon or Canon ??????
I have two Canon DSLR’s at the moment, however hopefully in october sometime i would like to move up to a pro pro camera, I would have about £1200 to spend.
I think FullFrame cameras cost too much for me, and the lenses are to dear.

So im thinking about the Canon EOS 7D or the Nikon D300s.

I have never had Nikon, so all my gear is Canon, everything of mine is Canon, so im not sure if it would make sense to stick to Canon, or whether i should just save about £1000 and sell all my canon gear as well, and then buy a decent Nikon with some real good lenses.

I have heard that Canons sensors have been pretty poor lately because they make their own, i like the look of Nikon cameras more, however, its not about the looks really.

I only wanna stick to Canon or Nikon, no others

Thanks

What is the difference between the Canon EOS 450D and the Canon EOS 500D?

Question by lotusgirl: What is the difference between the Canon EOS 450D and the Canon EOS 500D?
For a first-time buyer of a DSLR I find myself debating between these two models. Is the HD video mode really important? I don’t see how I’m going to need it if all I really intend on using the camera for is pictures… Why does a photographer need that as a feature? Are the pictures better quality on the 500d than a 450d? Can someone help me out here? In layman’s terms…pleaaassseee?

Best answer:

Answer by fhotoace
If you are a still photographer, video will be of no consequence.

Side by side .. you can choose the one that has the features you want.
