Is it best to charge my camera battery from flat?
Question by Keith W: Is it best to charge my camera battery from flat?
I remember when some batteries had a ‘memory’ …my Canon DSLR has a rechargable battery, (like most) is it acceptable to charge when some power remains or best to charge from flat?…ta

Answer by EE dude
Without knowing for sure which camera you have, and therefore which battery you have, my guess is that it is a Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer battery, typically indicated as LiIon or LiPo respectively. These are the latest types of batteries and used almost exclusively in photography because of their high power density. The other cool thing about them is, they lack the “memory” issue of previous battery technologies. You can easily “top off” the charge, in fact they prefer it. LiIon batteries actually don’t like to be “deep cycled” and usually have protection circuits to keep you from draining them completely.

Creates less noise and gives you the option of shallow depth of field. Lenses also have a wider angle of view which can come in handy in confined spaces.
I have no experience of the Canon 60D however the spec looks impressive and Canon is a very good make.

I’m getting the canon eos 450D this week, and i was just wondering what the best memory card to buy for it is. it’s a 12mp dslr, so I’m guessing i need a fairly big amount of space?

Any SD card, including SDHC cards will be compatible. 8GB is the best value at the moment and It’s more than big enough if you’re shooting JPEG. If you’re shooting RAW you might want to buy a couple. You should try to get one that is class 6 or at least class 4. Look for a little circle with a number in the middle on the card, this is the class rating. A slow card will slow your camera down.

Q&A: What is the difference in all the different lenses for a camera?
Question by Callum O’Neill: What is the difference in all the different lenses for a camera?

Answer by fhotoace
There are three basic lens types.
Prime lenses … single focal length. A EF 50 mm f/1.4 is an example
Zoom lenses … has continuous focal lengths as a EF 24-70 mm f/2.8 would have
Specialty lenses … Marco and perspective control are two such lenses .. EF 50 mm f/2.5 and TS-E 45mm f/2.8 (the perspective control lenses are sometimes called “tilt-shift” lenses)
Here is a link that will show you what various lens lengths may look like when attached to full frame or APS-C sensored cameras

I’m looking to buy my first DSLR. Which one do you recommend: Nikon D40x, Pentax 10D or Canon XTi?
Question by richholmes: I’m looking to buy my first DSLR. Which one do you recommend: Nikon D40x, Pentax 10D or Canon XTi?
Nikon D40x, Pentax 10D or Canon XTi are all 10mp and roughly same price…

Answer by Dr. Sam
Disclosure: I am becoming a Nikon fanatic.
What I’d suggest is that you swap out the D40X for the D80 in your comparison and then buy that. It’s about the same price as the Pentax that you are considering.
The February 2007 issue of Popular Photography has an article where they compared the top 10 MP DSLR’s. I took the scores and ranked the cameras similar to the way Formula 1 gives championship points. I just gave 5 for 1st place down to 1 for last place, splitting the difference when cameras tied in their catagories.
They evaluated Image Quality (giving this twice as much weight as anything else), Ease of Use, Control, and System Flexibility.
The final order and my scores are:
Nikon D80 – 17.5 points
- BEST in Image Quality, Control and System Flexibility
Canon Rebel XTi (400D) – 13.5 points
- Tied for best in System Flexibility
Pentax K10D – 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Samsung GX10 – 11 points
- Tied for best in Ease of Use
Sony Alpha 100 – 7 points
- LAST in Image Quality, Ease of Use and System Flexibility.”
Then again, this is the same magazine that put the Sony Alpha 100 dead last in this comparison named it the camera of the year in the previous issue! (In a follow-up to this seeming error, Pop Photo published the explanation that only the D80 and the Sony had been tested by the end-of-year deadline for choosing the Camera of the Year. Sony won on the strength of low price and built-in image stabilization. The other 3 that beat Sony in shoot-out were not tested until after the Camera of the Year was selected, because they were not yet available.)

If you want to get the “best” for the real world, consider the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D if you can afford it. For about 0-500 less, look at the results of the recent PopPhoto test and choose from that list according to your taste.
Personally, I use a Nikon D200 and would recommend it without hesitation to someone who has some knowledge of photography. For someone who wants the “best,” however is starting with somewhat of an “entry level” knowledge base, I’d suggest the Nikon D80.
There are people out there who will state their preference for the Canon cameras and I will not argue with them. The Canon 30D and 400D are excellent cameras as well. You would have to visit a camera store or camera department and pick them up and see what you think.

Here’s another reference from outside the photographic press. Consumer reports compared the Nikon D80, Canon Rebel XTi and Sony Alpha. Personally, I’d say that the Nikon came out on top here, also. It beats the Sony in “noise-free ISO” with an acceptable rating at ISO 1600 (kind of optimistic, I think…) compared to the Sony’s ISO 400. It beats the Canon (in my opinion) by having a spot meter that the Canon does not offer.

The next thing to consider is what lens to start with and where you go from there. If you are new to this, I’d say to just get the “kit” lens, which seems to be the 18-135 lens for the D80, and get started. Once you know where you really want to go with your photography, Nikon has an almost unlimited family of lenses to choose from.

Which DSLR would you recommend for a beginner?
Question by Dan: Which DSLR would you recommend for a beginner?
I have a Canon SLR which is on it’s last legs (given to me by an old friend in exchange for a pint!) and came with only a single lens. Neither the body nor the lens are of a quality worth keeping however the camera has nonetheless served me well.
I would now like to buy a DSLR as I have learned the very basics on a regualr SLR. Can you recommend a beginner-friendly DSLR?
Thanks.

Since you already have a Canon SLR, I’d say stick with Canon, the lens on your current camera, will work on the Canon DSLR cameras. The XSi would be a great camera to begin with.
http://dpreview.com read the review and specs. Then go to a real camera store and handle the camera.
Good luck and happy shooting.

Should I get a HD DSLR camera or just a regular camcorder?
Question by addictedtoyou-: Should I get a HD DSLR camera or just a regular camcorder?
I’m looking into making short films however my Canon IXUS now has a shutter problem, so I thought I might as well get a new one. So in my case, which is more worth it? Are HD DSLR cameras that bad?
Best answer:
Answer by Max Headroom
If it *is* just for movies, then an HD camcorder will be better.
dSLRs with movie recording ability are ok, however the movie recording is always an after-thought.
