Can anyone recommend a lens for a Canon DSLR 350D?
Question by Stolence: Can someone recommend a lens for a Canon DSLR 350D?
I already have a lens for the camera: Canon Zoom Lens EF-5 18-55mm, then it also says 1:3.5-5.6 II
Could someone explain these numbers and also recommend which lens I should buy now? I want to take close-up photographs and focus on objects which aren’t too close to me, so I’d need a Macro, right?
I’ve found these:

Are the makes Sigma and Tamron trustworthy? I know it would be better if I bought a Canon lens, however I’m on a budget… Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What you have is the basic kit lens that came with the camera. It isn’t Canon’s best lens, however it will suffice.
18-55mm means the range of focal lengths the lens can achieve. A larger number means the closer the subject will be brought to you.
The 1:3.5-5.6 is the maximum aperture size range, this is the max f-stop. A better lens tends to have a smaller number (e.g. f1.2 or f2.8) and is constant value.
The II indicates that this is the second version of this lens.
Right both Tamron and Sigma are well established lens manufacturers making lenses for all lens mounts. These lenses frequently outperform their Canon counterparts, at the budget level.
The two lenses you have listed are both budget telephotos, none of them (not even the Canon ones) are that good, however they suffice. I personally prefer the Sigma APO one because the there are APO glass element that prevent chromatic abberations, which are especially pronounced at long telephoto focal lengths.
I would recommend that when you can you should get the Canon 50mm f1.8 as well, it makes a really good portrait lens and punches above its price.
Also when you can afford to upgrade your standard zoom I’d recommend either the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or if you can afford it either the Canon 17-40mm f4L, or the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8.

Which DSLR camera should i go for, the Canon 500d or a Nikon D90?
Question by dogfreak: Which DSLR camera should i go for, the Canon 500d or a Nikon D90?
I want it primarily to take pictures of my ever active one year old, so i’m mainly going to be using it on fully automatic mode. Not really expecting to progress much further than being a point and shoot person, however if i do get chance i’ll try to learn some of the settings.

I have the Nikon d80 and have used a few different models of Canons when in school. In my personal experience Nikon far surpasses Canon for user friendly-ness.
I have a 9 month old who is non-stop and in auto the Nikon can take fabulous pictures of her.
If you decide to learn more about the camera and branch out it is great for experiementing and has tones of great features.

Canon DSLR lenses – EF / EF-S lenses?
Question by Robert Hemsley: Canon DSLR lenses – EF / EF-S lenses?
I am going to buy a canon 7d in a few weeks time. however i need to buy a lens for it as well (medium priced)
i know that EF-S lenses are designed for crop frame cameras, and EF lenses are designed for Full frame cameras however can also work for crop frame too (like canon 7d)
i also understand that a full frame camera will have a wider field of view compared to a crop frame camera that is using the same lens.
my question is:
do EF-S lenses actually use the correct zoom size (eg, 35mm) or do you have to compensate for the fact it is crop frame even though the lens is designed for crop frame?
if i used a 35mm EF lens on my crop frame camera, will i get the same field of view as a 35mm EF-S lens?
i ask this because i shoot gigs, and have found myself wanting to get the Sigma 24-70 f.28 (constant) EX DG lens. however was worried that the low end zoom might not be wide enough to shoot smaller venues. however ive tested how 24mm would look on my EF-S lens on a crop frame camera and it seems fine. however this sigma lens is technically a EF lens so i was worried the low end zoom might not actually be what i thought it would be.

All lenses, whether they are EF or EF-S are labeled with the focal length as if they were being used on a full frame 35mm camera. In order to calculate the field of view your crop frame sensor will record, you will need to multiply the lens focal length by 1.6
For example, If I use a 50mm lens on a Canon crop frame camera (no matter if it is an EF or EF-S lens) the resulting field of view would be the same as if you were using an 80mm lens on a full frame camera. The 24-70 lens you are asking about would have an equivalent full frame zoom range of 38.5mm – 112mm when used on a crop frame Canon camera.
To answer you ultimate question, if 24mm on your camera looked fine with one lens, it will look the same with any other lens with a 24mm focal length.
